How the 12 Animals Made the Zodiac Signs Calendar

Yoda

The Chinese Zodiac is a fascinating blend of mythology, tradition, and cosmic symbolism. But have you ever wondered why these 12 animals were chosen? And more importantly—why did the Cat miss out, while the Snake somehow slithered its way in despite being one of the slowest movers in the animal kingdom?

Legend has it that the Jade Emperor, ruler of the heavens, wanted to create a way to measure time. He decided that a grand race across a river would determine which animals would be honored in the zodiac cycle. The first 12 to cross the finish line would earn their place in the calendar.

On the day of the race, animals of all kinds gathered at the riverbank, eager to prove their worth. Some relied on strength, others on cunning, and a few—well, they just got lucky.

The Rat, knowing it was too small to compete with the bigger animals, hatched a plan. It befriended the Ox, convincing it to carry the Rat across the river. The Ox, being kind-hearted and strong, agreed. But just as they reached the shore, the Rat jumped off and dashed ahead—securing first place.

The Cat, however, was betrayed. Some versions of the legend say the Cat was supposed to ride with the Rat, but the Rat pushed it into the water or simply forgot to wake it up. Either way, the Cat never made it to the finish line, which is why—according to folklore—cats hold a grudge against rats to this day.

After the Rat and Ox, the Tiger arrived, using its raw power to swim across. But wait—why the Tiger and not the Lion? Well, in ancient China, the Tiger was seen as the ultimate symbol of strength and bravery, while the Lion was less culturally significant. The Tiger earned its place through sheer determination.

The Rabbit, despite being small, managed to hop across floating logs, securing fourth place. The Dragon, majestic and powerful, could have easily won—but it stopped to help villagers along the way, proving its noble nature.

Then came the Snake, and here’s where things get interesting. You’d think a snake would struggle in a race, but it wrapped itself around the Horse’s leg, hitching a ride unnoticed. Just as the Horse was about to cross the finish line, the Snake uncoiled and slithered ahead, claiming sixth place. Talk about sneaky!

The Horse, startled by the Snake’s trick, came in seventh. The Goat, Monkey, and Rooster worked together, helping each other across the river, securing eighth, ninth, and tenth place.

The Dog, despite being an excellent swimmer, got distracted playing in the water, arriving in eleventh place. And finally, the Pig, who had stopped for a snack and a nap, barely made it in twelfth place.

And so, the 12 animals were chosen, each representing a year in the Chinese Zodiac. The Cat, forever bitter, was left out, while the Snake proved that cunning beats speed. The Tiger roared its way in, while the Lion was simply never part of the cultural equation.

It’s a tale of strategy, luck, and a little bit of betrayal—but one that continues to shape traditions and beliefs to this day.
